Adding Tempo Markings

This tutorial explains how to add, edit, and delete tempo markings in ScoreTail using the Dorico-style inline popover.

1

What is a Tempo Mark?

A tempo mark indicates the speed of the music. ScoreTail supports three types of tempo marks.

♩ = 120

Metronome Mark

Shows the exact BPM with a note value. e.g. quarter = 120.

Allegro

Tempo Text

An Italian expression indicating the character and pace. e.g. Allegro, Andante.

Allegro ♩=144

Combined

Text with a metronome mark. e.g. Allegro ♩=144.

How to Add a Tempo Mark

Tempo marks are added through the inline popover triggered from a selected note.

  1. In SELECT mode, click a note where you want to place the tempo mark.
  2. Press Shift+T to open the tempo popover. Alternatively, right-click the note and choose "Change Tempo".
  3. Type your tempo expression in the input field (see Input Format below).
  4. Press Enter to confirm. The tempo mark appears above the staff.

Tip: You can also right-click any note or measure and choose "Change Tempo" from the context menu.

  2. Press Shift+T — the popover opens pre-filled with the current value. Alternatively, right-click the tempo mark and choose "Edit".
  3. Modify the text and press Enter to confirm.

You can also click directly on the tempo marking displayed on the score to open the edit popover.

6

Deleting a Tempo Mark

Open the tempo popover on a note with an existing mark, then use one of these methods:

Method 1

Clear the input field and press Backspace to delete the tempo mark.

Method 2

Click the "Delete" button shown on the right side of the popover.

7

Tempo and Playback

Tempo marks affect the playback speed. When you play back the score, ScoreTail reads the metronome BPM values to determine how fast to play each section. Multiple tempo marks in a piece allow for tempo changes throughout the score.

Tip: If no tempo mark is set, ScoreTail uses a default tempo of 120 BPM (quarter = 120).
