"America" is one of the most exuberant numbers from Leonard Bernstein's landmark 1957 Broadway musical West Side Story, with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The song uses a lively alternation between 6/8 and 3/4 time signatures to create a spirited debate between Puerto Rican characters about life in America, and has since become a staple of the orchestral and ensemble repertoire.
