"Der Atlas" (Atlas) is the eighth song from Franz Schubert's posthumous collection Schwanengesang (Swan Song), D.957, composed in 1828. The text is by Heinrich Heine, and this is one of the most dramatically powerful songs in Schubert's entire output.
The poet identifies with the mythological figure of Atlas, condemned to bear the weight of the entire world on his shoulders. But here, the unbearable burden is not the world itself but the weight of sorrow and heartbreak. The music in G minor is ferociously intense — the piano accompaniment features thundering tremolo figures and dramatic octave passages that evoke the crushing weight Atlas must bear.
