The Gavotte in D major is one of the most well-known pieces by Belgian-French composer François Joseph Gossec (1734–1829), originally composed for orchestra and later arranged for various solo instruments including violin and piano. Gossec was a pioneering figure in French Classical music and one of the founders of the Paris Conservatoire, and this graceful dance piece remains a staple in student repertoire.
