John Philip Sousa composed 'The Stars and Stripes Forever' on Christmas Day 1896 and it was designated the National March of the United States by an act of Congress in 1987. Sousa, known as 'The March King', created this rousing march with its famous piccolo countermelody, which became a symbol of American patriotism.
