Creating Tuplets

A triplet squeezes three notes into the space of two — a very common rhythm. This tutorial shows how to create triplets and other tuplets in ScoreTail.

1

What Are Tuplets?

The most common is the triplet: three 8th notes fitting into the space of one quarter note. Think of it as splitting a note into more pieces than normal.

TypeDescription
TripletTriplet (3:2) — three 8th notes in the space of one quarter note
QuintupletQuintuplet (5:4) — five notes in the space of four
SextupletSextuplet (6:4) — six notes in the space of four
SeptupletSeptuplet (7:4) — seven notes in the space of four

Creating a Triplet

Select a note and press Ctrl+3. The note splits into a triplet instantly.

Steps

  1. Press Esc to enter SELECT mode.
  2. Click the note you want to split.
  3. Press Ctrl+3. The note splits into three equal parts with a "3" bracket above.

Each of the three notes is one-third the original duration. You can edit their pitches individually right away.

After pressing Ctrl+3, it should look like this:

Other Tuplets

The same idea works for other ratios:

ShortcutRatioType
Ctrl+33:2Triplet
Ctrl+55:4Quintuplet
Ctrl+66:4Sextuplet
Ctrl+77:4Septuplet

You can also right-click any note and choose "Create Tuplet" to pick a custom ratio.

Editing Notes Inside a Tuplet

Once the tuplet is created, click any note inside it and edit normally:

  1. Click a note in the tuplet to select it.
  2. Press C–B to set its pitch.
  3. Use ↑/↓ to move by semitone.
  4. Press R to turn it into a rest.
  5. Press Del to clear it to a rest.
5

Removing a Tuplet

Select any note in the tuplet, right-click, and choose "Remove Tuplet". The bracket disappears and the note goes back to its original duration — but the individual pitches won't be kept.

6

Try It: E–D–C Triplet

Let's build a simple descending triplet.

  1. Click a quarter note in your score.
  2. Press Ctrl+3. It splits into three 8th-note triplets.
  3. Click the first note and press E.
  4. Click the second and press D.
  5. Click the third and press C.
  6. Press Space to hear the triplet.
